Cal Falls to Yale, 12-9, Despite 4 Goals by Zuralow

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore midfielder Danni Zuralow scored a team-high four goals in California's 12-9 loss to Yale, 12-9, in a non-conference game on Sunday at Johnson Field. The result gave the Golden Bears a 0-2 record on their Connecticut road trip. Overall, their record fell to 5-9, while the Bulldogs improved to 8-6.

Yale freshman Sara Greenberg scored a career-high six goals on Senior Day to lead all scorers in the game. Besides Zuralow, only senior Leanne Zilioli scored multiple goals (2) for the Bears, who also got 10 saves in 60 minutes from junior goalkeeper Hilary Lynch.

Cal had a 7-3 halftime deficit. But the Bears rebounded to outscore Yale, 6-5, on goals by Zuralow (2), Zilioli (1), freshman midfielder Madeleine Dale (1), sophomore midfielder Cristen Andrews (1) and sophomore defender Mary Downs (1), in the second half.

The Bears had a chance to get within one when Downs scored an unassisted goal at 58:37 to make the score 11-9 and Cal won the ensuing draw. But the Bears turned the ball over to the Bulldogs, and Yale's Kat Peetz scored with 26 seconds remaining for the final 12-9 score.

Cal plays one game this week, taking on MPSF opponent UC Davis at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Davis. The Bears have just one other game on their regular-season schedule - against MPSF opponent Oregon at 12 p.m. on April 30 in Eugene, Ore. - before the MPSF Championship is played May 5-7 also in Eugene.
