BERKELEY, Calif. - The California lacrosse team got within four goals of 17th-ranked Notre Dame in the second half before falling, 23-11, to the Irish in a non-conference game on Friday at Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears evened their record at 1-1, while Notre Dame opened the season at 1-0.
Cal sophomore Danni Zuralow (3 goals), junior Laura Cavallo (3 goals) and senior teammate Leanne Zilioli (2 goals, 1 assist) led the Bears in scoring with three goals each. Notre Dame got an amazing performance from senior Crysti Foote, who scored nine goals and two assists for 11 points.
Cavallo and Zilioli are now tied for the Cal season scoring lead, with five points each. Each player has four goals and one assist
Down 12-6 at halftime, Cal outscored the Irish, 5-3, over the first 8:31 of the second half to pull within four at 15-11. Cavallo scored her second and third goals to lead the Bears during that span. Cal also got goals from junior Liz Reifsnyder, Zilioli and Zuralow.
But Notre Dame scored the last eight goals of the game, including three by Foote and two by Jillian Byers.
Cal scored the first goal of the game, on Zuralow's unassisted strike at the 1:25 mark, but Notre Dame blitzed the Bears for five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead. The Bears scored two of the next three goals to make the score 6-3, and Cal freshman Sam Price scored her second goal of the season at the 22:10 mark. But Foote scored four of Notre Dame's six final first-half goals, as the Irish took their 12-6 halftime lead.
Bears senior Schuyler Sokolow picked up the second of her yellow cards and a subsequent red card with 10:43 remaining in the game.
Cal hosts Ohio State at noon on Sunday at Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes open their season at 7 p.m. tonight in the Bay Area at 20th-ranked Stanford.
