DAVIDSON, N.C. - The top-seeded California Golden Bear field hockey team (16-4 overall) captured the NorPac Conference Championship for the second consecutive year, with a convincing, 3-1, victory over Stanford on Saturday, in Davidson, N.C., at Belk Turf Field.

A defensive battle for the first 20 minutes of the contest, senior forward Valentina Godfrid finally was able to score the first goal for the Bears in the 21st minute. Godfrid tallied an assist three minutes after her own goal, off a goal by sophomore midfielder Ashley Glosz.

At the end second half, Stanford gained some momentum with a goal from Jamie Hais. However Cal didn't look back, with Godfrid adding her second goal of the game off a penalty corner in the 61st minute. Sophomore backfielder Rachel Moffitt and sophomore forward Andrea Lo were credited with the assists on the shot.

"It was a typical California-Stanford game," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said after the win. "We came out very strong from the beginning. Their score at the end of the first half gave them some momentum, but we ultimately responded really well. I feel really good about how the team played today."

Godfrid earned MVP honors of the tournament, after recording three goals in yesterday's win over Radford and two today against the Cardinal.

"I thought she (Godfrid) had a great tournament," Onstead said. "She seemed to relax a bit this weekend and let herself play her game. She was well deserving of the MVP honor."

Joining Godfrid on the all-tournament team were Glosz, Moffitt and senior midfielder Jamie Nance.

The Bears will play Ohio University in a NCAA Play-In game on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. (PT), at Maxwell Family Field in Berkeley.
