BERKELEY - The California field hockey team (1-2, 0-0 NorPac) was defeated by Michigan State (2-1, 0-0 Big Ten) 4-1, Friday afternoon at Maxwell Family Field in Berkeley.

The Golden Bears scored within the first twelve minutes on the Spartans. Junior Valentina Godfrid scored Cal's lone goal, she was assisted on the goal by Chilly Banuelos. That was the fifth goal of the season for the native of Rosario, Argentina.

Banuelos also tallied three shots, including one on the goal. Senior Teela Crosthwaite, Jennifer Crane, Alana Smith, freshman Andrea Lo and Katie Knoche all posted one shot attempt each.

The Bears return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 3 against Iowa. Match time at Maxwell Family Field is 5 p.m.
