BERKELEY, Calif. - California lost to 19th-ranked Yale, 14-4, as Katie Sargent scored six goals for the victorius Bulldogs on Sunday at Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears fall to 9-6 (2-1 MPSF), while Yale improves to 7-6 (2-3 Ivy League).
"Yale was upset from their loss on Friday" to Stanford, 9-8, Cal head coach Jill Malko said. "They wanted this game so bad. Not that we didn't want the game, but hey showed more heart and more desire on every loose ball. There was some fire in them. A train came through Memorial Stadium. We weren't able to stop it. I don't think we played all that horribly. They just played very well."
Junior Leanne Zilioli and sophomore Jocelyn Paul each scored a goal and an assist to lead Cal. Sargent, with six total points, was the game's high scorer. Aly Croffy added three goals and two assists for Yale.
Both teams got off to a quick start, as Yale's Sargent scored 31 seconds into the game. Cal sophomore Laura Cavallo scored five seconds after that to tie the game, 1-1.
Later down 3-1, Cal junior Leanne Zilioli set up sophomore Liz Reifsnyder at 4:16 to cut the margin to 3-2. But Yale scored five unanswered goals - featuring two goals and an assist by Croffy - to take an 8-2 lead into halftime.
Yale scored the first three goals, with two by Sargent, in the second half before Cal's Jocelyn Paul scored off a free position shot at 38:22. Sargent scored another two in a 3-0 run that put Yale up 14-3. Paul set up Zilioli's goal at 48:59 to make the score 14-4 and close out the scoring.
"Their physical play and their hustling to double team in the midfield got us out of sorts," Malko added. "We weren't able to get in a flow."
Bears sophomore goalkeeper Hilary Lynch made six saves, while Yale goalie Lonnie Sarnell made 12 saves.
Cal next hosts MPSF opponent Oregon at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, at Memorial Stadium. The Bears close out the regular season on April 30, hosting MPSF opponent UC Davis also at Memorial Stadium. The MPSF Championship tournament will be held May 5-7 on the campus of Saint Mary's in Moraga.
