Stats

BERKELEY - California midfielder Jessica Bird's first goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time.

The junior from San Diego fired a score past Boston University goalkeeper Erin Prediger midway through the second overtime period to give the Bears a 3-2 victory on Sunday at Maxwell Family Field.

It was the second consecutive overtime match the Bears (4-1) had played. On Saturday, the Cal fell to Louisville in overtime, 2-1.

Bird took an upfield pass from midfielder Samantha Gallop, and, racing in from the left side of the net, sent a shot past Prediger near the far post.

The Terriers (1-2) took a 1-0 lead at 18:47 on forward Jen Joyce's second goal of the season.

Cal goals by forwards Amber Madsen and Maggie Grimes three minutes apart midway into the second period gave Cal a 2-1 advantage. BU backfielder Lauren Vendetti tied the score 2-2 with a goal at 53:06.

Sunday's victory wrapped-up a five-game season-opening homestand for the Bears. Cal returns to action with four games in Springfield, Mo., this week: Sept. 8 (Southwest Missouri State); Sept. 9 (Southwest Missouri State); Sept. 11 (Ohio) and Sept. 12 (Saint Louis).
