Bears Win Season Opener, 3-1

Thanks to an offensive outburst from midfielder Alana Smith, the California field hockey team got its 2004 season off to a successful start defeating Indiana, 3-1, on Saturday at Maxwell Family Field.
Smith, a junior from Berkshire, England, had never scored a goal in her Cal career. Seventy minutes into the season, she had two to pace the Golden Bear win.
Smith put the Bears (1-0) up 1-0 seven minutes, 23 seconds into the match off a penalty corner. Jenna Long was credited with the assist.
Eight minutes later, forward Teela Crosthwaite pushed the Bears' lead to 2-0 off of a feed from forward Amber Madsen.
Hoosier midfielder Rachel Telian cut the Cal lead to 2-1 early in the second half. However, Smith and the Bears answered back five minutes later to provide the margin of victory.
The Bears missed an opportunity to extend their lead even further when midfielder Kiely Schmidt's penalty stroke was stop by Indiana goalkeeper Katie Kanara.
Kanara finished with eight saves. Cal keeper Kelly Knapp stopped eight shots as well.
The victory gave Cal head coach Shellie Onstead her 99th career victory. The Bears will try to make it 100 wins when they host Providence on Sunday, August 29. Match time at Maxwell Family Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
