Bears Capture Conference Win At UC Davis, 17-10

April 24, 2004

DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore attacker Leanne Zilioli scored four goals and freshman midfielder Elizabeth Reifsnyder added three more to lead California to a 17-10 win over UC Davis in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at Aggie Field Saturday afternoon. The Bears' win overshadowed the performance of UC Davis freshman attacker Katie McMahon, whose four goals broke the Aggies' single-season scoring record.

California improves to 7-8 overall and 2-1 in MPSF play while UC Davis falls to 9-4 overall and 1-3 in the MPSF.

McMahon finished the game with 52 goals for the season, breaking the old mark, set last season, by one. Senior attacker Leslie Kado, younger sister of former Bear Laura Kado, contributed two assists, tying the Aggies' career record of 62.

Senior midfielder Kelly Albin assisted McMahon on the game's first goal within the first minute of play, but the Bears answered nearly five minutes later with what would become a 5-0 scoring run. Senior midfielder Carly Preble, Zilioli and Reifsnyder each scored within a 2:25 span midway through the first half as part of California's charge. Albin and McMahon each added another first half goal, but Zilioli and senior midfielder Julianne Wu matched them score for score to give Cal a 7-3 lead at the break.

After Reifsnyder added an unassisted score at the 35:03 mark, UC Davis fought back with two goals in just under five minutes, bringing the Aggies to within three. However, that was the closest UC Davis approached following halftime. On two of the Aggies' second half goals, Cal responded with its own goal on the ensuing draw.

Junior goalkeeper Kristen Braasch posted 13 saves in net for the Aggies, while her counterpart freshman goalkeeper Hilary Lynch had eight, six of those recorded in the first half. California's senior attacker Colleen O'Mara led all players with three assists, improving her assists per game average to 2.33, and finished with four points. O'Mara began the day No. 3 among all NCAA Division I women's lacrosse players with a 2.29 assists per game mark.

The Bears return to Berkeley and Memorial Stadium for both their final home and regular season game this Saturday, May 1, at 1:00 p.m. when St. Mary's comes to town to complete the 2004 MPSF schedule. The MPSF Championship will follow in Denver, Colo., beginning on Thursday, May 6, and concluding on Saturday, May 8.
