Madsen Nets Two to Send No. 14 Cal past C. Michigan, 4-3

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Forward Amber Madsen scored two goals and Valentina Godfrid and Alana Smith added a score apiece to lead the No. 14 California Field Hockey team to a 4-3 defeat of Central Michigan Monday at Ocker Field on the Michigan campus.

The Bears (14-4) took a 1-0 lead four minutes into the match on Godfrid's 18th goal of the season. The score placed the Rosario, Argentina native second on the Cal single-season goals list, one behind the 19 Renee Chatas tallied in 1983. Her 46 points are also second on the single-season list behind the 47 points current Cal assistant coach Megan Sainsbury notched as a Bear in 1999.

Cal pushed its lead to 2-0 at 6:35 on Madsen's first goal of the afternoon. Jamie Nance was credited with her first assist this season, on Madsen's redirection of the right-side shot.

Chippewas' midfielder Erica Takach tied the score 2-2 with back-to-back goals at 38:19 and 48:40 before Madsen broke the deadlock with her second score of the day at 60:22.

Smith scored the game-winning goal for Cal at 64:51, redirecting a shot from Madsen. Takach completed a hat trick with an unassisted goal at 67:09.

Cal outshot the Chippewas 30-6 and Takach recorded all of Central Michigan's shooting attempts. Godfrid paced the Bears with a game-high 13 shots.

Cal returns to action Oct. 30 to host rival Stanford on Senior Day in Berkeley. Game time at Maxwell Family Field is 1 p.m.
