ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
The No. 14 California field hockey team struck first but it was No. 9 Michigan which had the final say in a 3-1 Wolverines victory at Ocker Field Friday afternoon.
Bears' forward Valentina Godfrid gave Cal (12-4) a 1-0 lead, six minutes, 20 seconds into the match. The sophomore from Rosario, Argentina scored her team-leading 14th goal of the season, sending a loose ball into the right side of Michigan cage.
The Wolverines (12-5) tied the score six minutes later as Katie Morris redirected a feed from Lori Hillman past Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp.
Michigan took the lead for good on a penalty stroke by Adrienne Hortillosa at 31:35. The Wolverines were awarded the free hit after a Cal defender pulled a ball shot by Jessica Blake off of the goal line. Hortillosa fired low into the right corner of the Cal cage for a 2-1 Michigan lead.
Mary Fox capped the Michigan scoring with a goal at 56:03.
The defeat to Michigan was the first time the Bears had lost back-to-back games this season. Cal fell to No. 12 Boston College, 1-0, on Oct. 9. Cal was also outshot 18-9 - the first time that has happened to the Bears in 2004.
Godfrid led Cal with a game-high four shots. Knapp recorded seven saves in the loss.
The Bears return to action Sunday against Ohio State. Match time at Ocker Field is 10:00 a.m. PST.
