Stanford, Calif. - The California women's lacrosse team (10-5 3-1, MPLL) dropped its first conference game of the year this evening, April 23, as the Stanford Cardinal (11-3, 4-0, MPLL) cruised past the Bears, 14-6, at Maloney Field in Stanford. With the victory, the Cardinal claims the MPLL title outright with a perfect 4-0 mark, while improving to 9-3 all-time vs. California. Cal takes second place in the MPLL with a 3-1 slate.

The Cardinal took a resounding 4-0 lead in the first 6:24 with a pair of goals from leading scorer, sophomore Kelsey Twist. Julia Calzonetti contributed one goal and one assist as the Cardinal took the early lead. The Golden Bears got on the board at 7:53, but Stanford rebounded for two more scores in the next 30 seconds to take the 6-1 lead. Claire Calzonetti took control of the offense as she scored three goals and added one assist to widen the gap to 8-2. Each team scored two more times in the first half as Stanford went into the break with the 10-4 advantage.

In the second half, Abbi Hills and Megan Burker tacked on a couple of quick goals in the first five minutes to give the Cardinal its biggest lead of the night at 12-4. Twist wrapped up the evening for Stanford with two goals to make her the night's leading scorer with four goals. The Bears could only muster two more scores in the second half as Stanford rolled to the 14-6 victory.

Molly Brady tallied her 30th and 31st scores of the season in her 10th multiple goal game of the year. Colleen O'Mara recorded her 12th game with at least one assist while her two dishes this evening leave her just two shy of the Cal single season record (24).

Cal concludes the 2003 season at the MPLL Championships Saturday - Sunday, May 3-4, at Maloney Field in Stanford. Last season, Cal lost to Stanford in the championship game. Other participants include Denver, Saint Mary's and UC Davis.
