Berkeley, Calif. -
The California women's lacrosse team (10-4 3-0, MPLL) held the UC Davis Aggies to the lowest opponent total of the season in a 13-4 blowout this afternoon, April 19, at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. With the victory the Bears improve to 3-0 in MPLL action while the Aggies fall to 1-3 in conference play.
Cal outshot the visiting Aggies by a count of 29-12, telling the story of the game. But it was UC Davis that scratched the scoreboard first, as leading scorer Jamie Fitzpatrick found the back of the net 11:51 into the match to hand the Aggies the early 1-0 lead. That was the only lead of the game for Davis, as the Bears rattled off seven unanswered goals to end the first half of play.
Junior midfielder Julianne Wu got things started at the 15:34 mark and sophomore attacker Molly Brady followed 24 seconds later with her first of four goals on the day to give the Bears the 2-1 lead that they would never look back from. Brady tacked on two more scores while junior Colleen O'Mara, freshman Leanne Zilioli, and sophomore Lauren Karl each added one of their own. Cal cruised into halftime with the commanding 7-1 advantage.
More of the same in the second stanza as O'Mara connected with Wu in front of the net just nine seconds into the action. Edwards followed suit 1:15 later with her first goal of the afternoon and a 9-1 lead. The Aggies' Leslie Kado, sister of former Bear Laura Kado, ended the Bears nine goal streak with a score off a nice feed from Kate Hanson at the 34:18 mark. Cal's Zilioli tallied her second and third goals in succession before Kado struck again for her second goal, bringing the score to 11-3 with less than 15 minutes to play.
Defensive midfielder Lauren Karl drew the responsibility of covering the Aggies' leading goal scorer Jaime Fitzpatrick and held her to one goal through the majority of the game. But the Davis senior got her dues with 2:29 left to play, scoring her second goal to cut the Cal lead to 12-4. With time winding down and the game basically over, sophomore Liz Beisler collected her first assist as a Golden Bear, finding junior Besse Gardner for the last score of the game and a 13-4 Cal victory.
With her four goals on the day, Molly Brady took over the team lead in goals with 29. Colleen O'Mara collected a goal and three assists to extend her team leading point total to 39.
Cal concludes its regular season slate Wednesday, April 23 at 7:00 p.m. in an MPLL matchup against cross-bay rival No. 16 Stanford at New Maloney Field in Stanford.
