IOWA CITY, Iowa - No. 17 Cal lost to No. 9 Iowa, on the road, 2-1, after a shot by Lauren Stiver ended things 2:36 into sudden-death overtime. It was a classic battle of two teams that plan to make a lot of noise nationally before this season's all said and done with.

Scoring began 36:41 into the game thanks to great defensive play by the Iowa backfield and a season-high tying 10-save performance by Cal's Kelly Knapp. In the 37th minute Sarah Dawson of Iowa was able to finally place a strike past Knapp to put Iowa up 1-0. But the Bears answered back 1:15 later when All-American Nora Feddersen scored off a beautiful assist by sophomore Jenna Long to lock the game at 1-1. The score would remain the same for the next 35 minutes, when the Hawkeyes were able to capitalize off a penalty shot in the third minute of overtime.

The Hawkeyes beat Cal at its own game, playing superb defense in the backfield and outshooting the Bears 23-8. The loss also broke the Bears' six-game overtime win streak when playing games away from home.

Cal will have to shake this loss off quickly and look forward to a conference game against Southwest Missouri State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and a huge contest against No. 6 Penn State on Sunday, at noon.
