PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Drew Olson threw for two touchdowns, Brandon Chillar
ran 65 yards to score after a blocked field goal, then Justin Medlock kicked a
41-yard field goal in overtime as UCLA outlasted California 23-20 on Saturday.
Trailing since early in the game, the Bears rallied for a touchdown and
2-point conversion with 11 seconds remaining to force overtime. Their comeback
ended, however, when Tyler Frederickson's 50-yard field-goal attempt hit the
left upright.
The Bruins (5-2, 3-0 Pac-10) got the ball first in overtime and managed just
1 yard on two rushes before Olson threw an incomplete pass. Medlock then
trotted on and drilled his kick.
The Bears (3-5, 1-2) wound up with a longer field-goal try after Aaron
Rodgers dumped the ball off to Adimchinobe Echemandu on third-and-9 from the
24. Echemandu tried to reverse his field and scramble into the open - but
instead was dropped for a 9-yard loss.
Olson finished 9-of-20 for 173 yards.
Rodgers threw a 35-yard scoring pass to Burl Toler on fourth-and-10 with 11
seconds left in regulation. Toler caught the pass at the 2 and spun over the
goal line as a defender hit him.
Rodgers then rolled right and threw to Echemandu, who was just over the goal
line, for the 2-point conversion to tie it at 20.
Rodgers, who finished 28-of-41 for 222 yards, engineered the 68-yard scoring
drive that started with 2:19 remaining.
The Bruins had blown the PAT after their fourth-quarter touchdown, or they
would have had a nine-point lead.
Olson connected on scoring passes of 31 yards to Marcedes Lewis on the
Bruins' first series of the game, and 40 yards to Craig Bragg early in the
second half.
Spencer Havner twice blocked Frederickson's field goal tries, the second
resulting in Chillar's fourth-quarter touchdown as the Bears were threatening
to take the lead.
Trailing 14-3, the Bears closed within two points with a field goal and a
touchdown in a 2:19 span of the third quarter.
After Frederickson kicked a 39-yarder, the Bears got the ball back on the
UCLA 6 when Wendell Hunter recovered Olson's fumble. The Bruins' quarterback
lost the ball as he was being sacked by Monte Parson.
Two plays later, Rodgers scored on a quarterback draw from 3 yards out. His
pass on the 2-point conversion attempt sailed high over the head of Geoff
McArthur.
Frederickson made a 47-yarder with 2:51 left in the first quarter after
missing a 51-yard attempt earlier. The Bruins' Havner blocked Frederickson's
34-yard try midway through the second quarter.
On the ensuing series, Ebell ran 82 yards to an apparent touchdown, but it
was called back and the Bruins were penalized for holding on the play.
The Bears have lost two in a row after upsetting No. 4 Southern California
34-31 in triple overtime. Cal lost 35-21 to Oregon State, then had a bye before
facing UCLA.
