The California field hockey squad landed its second straight loss Sunday afternoon against top-ranked Maryland, 3-1, at Artificial Turf Facility in College Park, MD. The Golden Bears fall to 6-3 (1-0 NorPac) for the season as the Terrapins boost their nearly perfect record to 10-1 (0-1 ACC). Junior Nora Feddersen scored the lone goal for the Bears in the 58th minute to prevent the shutout.
Maryland's Jackie Ciconte's first career goal proved to be the game-winner in the second half as Cal was outshot by the Terrapins, 31 to the Bears' two.
The first goal of the game came occurred after a direct penalty corner shot by Maryland's Sara Silvetti was stopped by Bear keeper Kelly Knapp. Izzy Palmer raced to the ball and flipped it over the outstretched Knapp to put the Terrapins up, 1-0.
Ciconte's goal in the 49th minute gave Maryland the 2-0 edge. The Terps followed two minutes later as Colleen Barbieri fed Carissa Messimer at the left post to get one by Knapp.
Under-21 German national team member, Nora Feddersen, fired in her fourth goal of the season in the 58th minute off of a direct corner, assisted by seniors Michelle Wald and Danya Sawyer to score the Bears solo goal of the game.
Knapp, who is in the top-five in the nation in scoring defense, recorded 17 saves in the effort.
The top-ranked Bears complete their four game road trip at Pacific, on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
