The No. 18 California field hockey team won its fifth game of the season Saturday afternoon at Maxwell Family Field over No. 8 Iowa, 3-2. After a 12-day rest for Cal, senior Pooja Mehta led the Golden Bears to the victory notching two goals for the day. Cal improves to 5-1 (1-0 in NorPac) and Iowa drops to 4-3 for the season.

The scoreless first half was credited to the defense, as Bear goalkeeper recorded two saves and Hawkeye goalie Barbara Weinberg stopped five of Cal's shots.

Hawkeye Pattie Gillern scored her second goal of the season three and a half minutes into the second half to get Iowa on the board first. Cal responded at 41: 23 with a goal by Mehta, assisted by junior co-captain Nora Feddersen. The Feddersen and Mehta duo replied two minutes later to give Cal the 2-1 lead. The Bears were on a roll for three straight minutes, as senior Michelle Wald fired in the third and final goal for the day for Cal at 44:50, assisted by Lisa D'Anjou and Feddersen.

During one of Iowa's seven second half penalty corners, Tiffany Leister tightened Cal's lead at 51:08, brought in by Lindsay Miller and stopped by Lauren Edwards. Cal shut down Iowa for the remaining 29 minutes of the game with stellar defensive play by freshman Alana Smith and junior co-captain Erin Booth.

Today's game marked the Bears' first game played on their brand new state-of-the-art turf at Maxwell Family Field (formerly Kleeberger Field). The home game was also the first time in 10 years that California has hosted both a field hockey and football game on the same day. No. 23 Cal football faced Air Force, game time at 2 p.m.

California hits the road for a four game roadtrip beginning Thursday, Sept. 26 at Georgetown at 3:30 p.m. (ET). Then on Friday, Sept. 27 the Bears take on Virginia in Charlottesville, VA with a 6 p.m. (ET) game time. Cal wraps up their East Coast trip facing Maryland, Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. (ET). The Bears complete the roadtrip at Pacific, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
