Cal Defeats Stanford, 2-1, In Overtime

The California field hockey team defeated Stanford Saturday afternoon in overtime, 2-1, at Varsity Field Hockey Turf in Stanford, CA. Junior Nora Feddersen scored the golden goal in the 81st minute to wrap up the Bears' NorPac season with a perfect 6-0 record. With the win, the Bears improve to 11-6 overall as the Cardinal falls to 8-10 (4-2 NorPac).

Cal jumped out to an early lead as senior Pooja Mehta scored her sixth goal of the year only one and a half minutes into the game.

The Bears stopped all eight of Stanford's first half penalty corners, finishing the stanza with a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinal fought back with less than seven minutes remaining in the game to tie the match and force an overtime period. Amanda Billmyer of Stanford connected with a pass from Lyndsay Erickson to score her ninth goal of the year for the Cardinal.

At 80:20, Feddersen linked with a misplayed ball, resulting in a game-winning goal that trickled right by the Stanford goalkeeper. The goal was her team-leading 10th of the season, and her fourth game-winning goal overall. Feddersen's 26 points currently ties her personal best in a single season.

Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp collected 10 saves in the victory as Stanford's two goalkeepers, Emily Zander and Ana Kralovec, combined for six saves.

The win named Cal NorPac Champions for the season. The Bears now enter the NorPac Tournament as the number one seed for the West Division. Play begins Thursday, Nov. 7 and will continue until Saturday, Nov. 9. Stanford will serve as host for the 2002 Tournament with all games played at Varsity Field Hockey Turf in Stanford, CA. The winner of the NorPac tournament will host an NCAA Play-in Game on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The winner of that game advances to NCAA Regionals.
