Field Hockey Knocks Off Stanford 1-0 in Double Overtime Penalty Strokes

Field Hockey Knocks Off Stanford 1-0 in Double Overtime Penalty Strokes

Sept. 23, 2000

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford (4-6, 3-2 NorPac) and California (5-3, 3-0 NorPac) played a grueling match that came down to penalty strokes to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 victory. Neither team was able to score during regulation or the two sudden-death overtime periods.

While not a common ending for field hockey, Stanford has faced two conference opponents this week in games decided by strokes. Cal led off the first series of strokes and after Stanford goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro stopped the first shot, the next three Cal strokers scored. Three Stanford players attempted shots before the team was mathematically eliminated by a score of 3-0.

The Cardinal out-shot the Golden Bears 23 to 11 and recorded 10 penalty corners to Cal's two.

Cal travels to Stockton next Saturday to face Pacific in a nonconference affair.

Although Cal and Pacific are both members of the NorPac Conference, next weekend's game will not count towards the respective teams' conference records because the two teams have already played each other earlier this season in a conference matchup.
