BERKELEY - California lost its first home game of the season as Cornell downed the Bears in overtime. It was also Cal's first loss in extra sessions as the Bears have had a knack for pulling out overtime games this season.

Their luck ran out as Cornell's leading scorer, Anne Starkey, put in a rebound off of a penalty corner at 9:53 of overtime.

Cornell started off the scoring in the second half when Cal defender, Erin Robinson, made a blatant tackle near the goal, giving Big Red a penalty stroke at 19:40.

Karliegh Burns connected on the penalty shot as the freshmen midfielder placed a shot to the left of Cal keeper Sarah Hoehn.

The Bears responded three minutes later as Stephanie Lyons slapped in a shot from just inside the semi-circle with 16:39 left in regulation.

Playing under gloomy skies and spotted rain showers, the two teams battled back and forth for the first half without much offensive opportunities. Cal and Cornell combined for just five penalty corners and 10 shots on goal.

Cal head coach, Shellie Onstead, was not happy with what she saw Monday afternoon. "I'm kind of disappointed," she said. "I feel like we had some good momentum, playing better each game, and I would say we didn't play very well overall.

The Bears' backfield had some bright spots though, as Leticia Galyean, Alyssa Sprenger, Erin Robinson and Leslie Katch did a good job of holding off Starkey who leads Cornell in scoring with seven goals and 19 points.

Senior keeper Sarah Hoehn made 10 saves on the day as many shots were of the game-saving sort.

Cal hosts Saint Louis Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
