Biography

Fall 2016: Posted a 7-3 singles record…reached the singles quarterfinals of the Aggie Invitational…posted three wins at the UCSB Classic…reached the round of 64 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships...finished with a 3-3 mark in doubles…partnering Ryan Cardiff, won two rounds in the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis.

Spring 2016: Notched his first doubles win in a dual match when he teamed up with J.T. Nishimura to defeat USC’s Thibault Forget/Tanner Smith, 6-3, at court-three doubles and clinch the doubles point against the Trojans…wound up with a 6-4 singles record and 2-5 doubles record in his first season as a Golden Bear.
 
Fall 2015: Won his first singles and doubles matches as a collegian in the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis…in singles in Davis, Shen beat the Aggies’ Tommy Lam, 6-0, 6-3, in the round of 16, and then Shen defeated Santa Clara’s Kamran Khan, 7-, 6-2, in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals…the first-year Bear also paired with fellow freshman Gunther Matta to knock off Santa Clara’s Connor Garrett/Jeffrey Liang, 8-5, in doubles...at the UCSB Classic, Shen beat Oregon’s Alberto Reyes, 6-1, 6-3, to advance out of the singles round of 16 before losing in the quarterfinals.

Personal/Previous: Undeclared major…tabbed a five-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network, which ranked him 37th nationally and 10th in California among the class of 2015 recruits…reached the round of 128 in singles and round of 64 in doubles at the 2015 USTA National Championships (boys 18 & 16)…advanced to the singles semifinals of the 2014 Ojai Valley Tournament…named the Newbury Park High School team’s MVP in 2014 and 2015…named co-MVP of the Marmonte League in 2015…was unbeaten in league play in 2014-15…named a 2015 Ventura County Star Scholar-Athlete of the Year…Shen’s best sports moment was a 6-4, 6-1, first-round upset of Francis Tiafoe – now a professional player – at the 2011 Easter Bowl.
