Biography

Fall 2016: Entered the fall ranked No. 13 in the country in singles...posted a 7-3 fall singles record…reached the quarterfinals at the ITA Men’s All-American Championships, beating Virginia’s fourth-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 16 to qualify for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships…at national indoors, he reached the round of 16, falling to No. 43-ranked Nuno Borges of Mississippi State, 6-7(8), 7-6(4), 6-4…partnering Filip Bergevi, the pair entered the fall ranked No. 2 in doubles…the pair ended the fall with an 8-2 record, which included a championship run at the ITA Men’s All-American Championships…en route to the final, they beat the No. 13 team of Matic Spec and Felix Corwin from Minnesota, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6, Georgia Tech’s 14th-ranked team of Christopher Eubanks and Carlos Benito, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6, the No. 10 team of Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven of USC 2-6, 6-2, 10-6, and Wake Forest’s third-ranked team of Christian Seraphim and Skander Mansouri, 6-3, 6-7, 10-8…in the final, Lakat and Bergevi defeated the North Florida pair of Jack Findel-Hawkins and Lasse Muscheites 6-4, 6-2, becoming just the second pair in California program history to win the All-American doubles championship…that title propelled the pair into the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, in which the Bears reached the round of 16 before falling to Valparaiso’s 55th-ranked team of Charlie Emhardt and Jeffrey Schorsch, 7-5, 4-6, 11-9…Lakat and Bergevi also competed together at the Burlingame Futures, reaching the doubles semifinals.

Spring 2016: Doubles All-American and All-Pac-12 First-Team selection made a big impact in his debut as a Golden Bear, helping Cal reach the NCAA semifinals and claiming a final No. 27 singles ranking… in the NCAA quarterfinals, Lakat – then ranked 30th – upset the top-ranked Mikael Torpegaard, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(6), at No. 1 singles to clinch Cal’s 4-3 upset of fifth-ranked Ohio State and send the Bears to the semifinals…Lakat and Filip Bergevi earned a final No. 8 ranking and All-America honors after reaching the NCAA doubles quarterfinals…the duo defeated Eastern Kentucky’s Alex Alvaro/Ramon van Flymen, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 32 and Denver’s Henry Craig/Alex Gasson, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(11), in the round of 16 to get to the NCAA quarters, in which they lost to Notre Dame’s Alex Lawson/Quentin Monaghan, 6-3, 7-5…the two Bears also won their matches in Cal’s first three wins in the NCAA team tournament…that included clinching the doubles point against Mississippi with a 6-4 victory over Fabian Fallert/Grey Hamilton in the round of 32 and clinching doubles against TCU with a 7-5 triumph over the 65th-ranked Hudson Blake/Reese Stalder in the round of 16...Lakat was a key figure in the Pac-12 tournament as well, as he and Bergevi clinched doubles points in Cal’s victories over Washington (4-0) and USC (4-1) that led the Bears to their first Pac-12 semifinal appearance…Lakat also clinched the 4-0 first-round win over Washington with a court-one singles victory over No. 91 Mitch Stewart, 6-2, 6-4…Lakat posted a final singles record of 18-12 and a final doubles record of 25-10 in 2015-16.
 
Fall 2015: Had an impressive debut at Cal, pairing with Andre Goransson to win the doubles title at the Battle in the Bay Classic...the 25th-ranked and second-seeded Bears beat San Diego’s 17th-ranked and top-seeded Filip Vittek/Jordan Angus, 8-5, in the final…Lakat and Goransson also reached the doubles round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships…in singles, the top-seeded Lakat advanced to the regional quarterfinals…his regional run included a win over Washington’s ninth-seeded Enzo Sommer, 6-1, 6-4, in the round of 16…in the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships, the 36th-ranked Lakat upset Georgia Tech’s 24th-ranked Christopher Eubanks, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in the singles round of 32 to advance as far as the round of 16.

Personal/Previous: Political economy major…parents are Gabriela and Serge Lakat...the 2015-16 season is Lakat’s first season at Cal, after the France native played for two years at Mississippi State…he posted career records of 39-26 in singles and 38-28 in doubles at MSU, including a 17-11 singles record and 24-11 doubles mark in the 2014-15 season…Lakat wound up with a No. 65 ITA singles ranking for 2014-15; his highest ranking last season with 36th…Lakat was an SEC first-team selection as a sophomore and a second-team choice as a freshman…Lakat twice claimed academic All-SEC honors…he earned the 2014 ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year award…partnered with Julian Cash to claim the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Doubles championship…Lakat capped the season by playing in the NCAA team tournament with the Bulldogs…in the postseason’s first round, he teamed with Julian Cash to beat 49th-ranked Henry Craig and Alex Glasson, 8-7(10), and clinch the doubles point in MSU’s eventual 4-3 win over Denver… Cash and Lakat ended the season with a 17-5 record and a No. 14 ITA ranking; the pair was ranked as high as No. 6 in 2014-15…Lakat played at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the same day as the grand reopening of Cal’s facility, as Mississippi State lost to the Golden Bears, 4-2, in the finale of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 24, 2015.
