A member of the California swim team from 1985-86, van Bentum was a two-time NCAA champion, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 1985 and the 200 free in 1986 … in addition, she finished in the top five other times: 1985 — 3rd in 100 free, 3rd in 200 free, 5th in 100 fly; 1986 — 3rd in 100 free, 4th in 100 fly … Van Bentum broke school marks in the 50 free (23.15) and the 100 free (49.63) … a member of the Netherlands’ 1980, 1984 and 1988 Olympic teams, she also participated in the 1985 World University Games and was an Academic All-American in 1985 and 1986 … she won a bronze medal in the 1980 Olympics, a sliver medal in the '84 and '88 Olympic Games as part of the Netherlands' 400 meter free relay team.
