Directed Cal to the NCAA team total offense title in 1975, as the Bears averaged 458 yards per game that season … the Bears were Pac-8 Co-Champions with an 8-3 record as Roth passed for 1,880 yards and 14 touchdowns with just seven interceptions … Sporting News first-team All-America selection in 1976 …  succumbed to cancer and passed away in February following his senior season … played in the Japan Bowl all-star game in January of 1977, just a month before his death …  Roth was the first player to ever have his number retired by the Cal Football program.
