One of Cal's greatest track and field athletes who held the school shot put record that stood for over 19 years … devoted 22 years of his life to Cal, as an athlete, coach and administrator … set a Cal school record in the shot put with a throw of 59-8.75 while taking fourth at the NCAA meet in 1962 … also finished fifth as a junior at the NCAA meet in ’61 with a toss of 56-6.5 … went on to win the Olympic Trials in 1968 with what was then the fifth longest throw in history (67-4.50) … went on to take fifth in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, despite competing with a virus … came back to serve as a Cal assistant track coach in 1969 and assumed the head coaching job in 1970 … as a rookie coach, he guided the Bears to an NCAA track and field title in 1970, though Cal had to forfeit the crown and move down to seventh place … served as the school's Athletic Director from 1972 to 1991, when he became the AD at Miami … credited with the revitalization of a dormant athletic program, helping the football program to four bowl berths during his tenure, including three during the 90's … also helped the basketball program to four post-season tournament berths (3 NITs, 1 NCAA) … teams at Cal collected 21 different national championships in six different sports during his tenure in Berkeley … was the Managing Director of Sports for the Atlanta Committee for the 1996 Olympic Games … Later served as the Athletic Director at the University of Houston.
