A versatile athlete who made his biggest headlines in track and field … set an intercollegiate mark with the 16-pound shot put … won the bronze medal in the shot put for the United States at the 1920 Olympics with a mark of 46-5.25 (14.15 meters) … also was an alternate for the 1924 Olympics … .was a starting lock on Cal's 1914 rugby team … lettered in football as a substitute left guard on Cal's 1916 football team … went on to a distinguished military career with the U.S. Marines … helped lead the Marines ashore in the famous Iwo Jima campaign in 1944 … also received a Navy Cross for leading forces in the Solomon Islands in 1943 … later he was promoted to brigadier general … among the many medals he received was the Bronze Star … born September 21, 1894 in Volcano, Calif., he died on November 25, 1951 in Bethesda, Md., survived by sister Mrs. Ruette Fessel of Pine Grove, Calif.
