Cal's head track & field coach for 33 years, helped mold such world record-holders as Tom Moore, Archie Williams, Grover Klemmer, Lon Spurrier and Leamon King … head coach of the U.S. Olympic team in 1952 that competed in Helsinki … participated as an athlete in the 1924 Olympics and won a silver medal in the decathlon … also a U.S. Olympian in 1920 … a college track star at Missouri, he first came to Cal during a dual meet in 1922 when he was the high-point scorer in a meet won by Cal, 85-45 … named Cal's head coach in 1933, serving until '65, and compiled a 125-92 dual meet record … served as Cal's Athletic Director from 1947-55 and one of his first moves was to hire Pappy Waldorf as head coach in football … worked as the director of the NCAA track & field rules committee … Cal began the annual Brutus Hamilton Invitational in 1997.
