A native of Sweden, he won the 100 butterfly at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, after having set the world record in the same event a couple of months earlier in Austin, Texas … between 1976 and 1983 he became Swedish champion 22 times … while at Cal, established school and NCAA records in the 100 and 200 fly, both events he won the NCAA title in 1979 and 1980 … was a member of the 400 medley relay which re-set the NCAA record in 1979, while winning the NCAA crown … a member of NCAA Championship squad in 1979 and 1980 … also won Pac-10 titles in the 200 fly (1979) and 400 medley relay (1980) … a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society, he was awarded an NCAA post graduate scholarship, as well as being named a Top 10 NCAA Scholar-Athlete.
