Feb. 28-March 2, Pacific Coast Doubles, La Jolla, All Day
NEXT WEEK: March 5, OREGON, BERKELEY, 1:30 p.m.

THE MATCH-UP: On Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 1:30 p.m., the Cal men's tennis team hosts the University of Utah at the Hellman Tennis Complex. On Friday, Feb. 28, Cal travels to the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament in La Jolla, CA.

THE LINEUPS: Head coach Peter Wright has yet to set a lineup for this week's matches. Cal's No. 1 singles player, Bobby Mahal continues to suffer from tendonitis in his elbow and is not scheduled to play this week. Look for Alex Sueur, David Sutton, Nathan Jackmon, Chris Santoso, Minh Le, and Brian Fernando to see action against Utah. They will be joined by Adam Gross and Chris Cornell for the doubles tournament with all eight players expected to play in La Jolla.

PREVIOUS MATCH UPDATE: Cal recorded a 4-3 victory over the University of Washington on Sunday, Feb. 16. In singles action Le, Santoso and Fernando came away winners at Nos. 3, 5 and 6, respectively. Jackmon, playing at No. 2, lost a close three-set match to Nick Williams, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6, while Sutton at No. 4 took his opponent to three sets, as well. In doubles play, the Bears swept the Huskies taking the doubles point which proved to be the difference in the match.

THE COMPETITION: Coming off a 7-0 victory over Saint Mary's on Feb. 23, Utah arrives in Berkeley with an overall record of 7-3 and a No. 58 ranking in the current ITA poll. The Utes are led by senior Christian Svensson, who is undefeated in dual match play this season.

At the Pacific Coast doubles, the Cal men will face some of the top doubles teams in the nation. The tournament is an open tournament, thus Cal will be unable to generate team results. Individual results, however, will count toward national rankings provided the opponent is a collegiate team.

CAL IN THE RANKINGS: The Bears are currently the No. 23-ranked team in the ITA's Rolex Fall Rankings, released Dec. 10. Individually, Cal players rank as follows:

Singles Doubles
21. Bobby Mahal (jr.) 11. Bobby Mahal (jr.) / Nathan Jackmon (jr.)

The ITA's Spring No. 1 ranking will be released in March.

THE COACHES: Peter Wright enters his fourth year at the helm of the Cal program after spending last summer in Atlanta as head coach of the Irish Olympic tennis team. The ninth coach and fourth alumnus to lead the Bears, he boasts a 41-30 (.577) career record and earned Wilson/ITA Regional Coach of the Year honors in 1994. Wright is assisted by associate head coach Cordell Ho, who is also in his fourth year with the Bears.
