BERKELEY, Calif.--There was some good news when the Cal football team received news
on Wednesday that starting linebacker Keith Miller's MRI revealed the junior had not torn
the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during an injury in the Houston opener. The MRI
was taken Tuesday night and it revealed that surgery was not required. However, the
injury, combined with a related ankle sprain, means he will be out a minimum of four to
five weeks. He will begin rehabilitation of the injury immediately. The other note is that
Miller does have the benefit of a redshirt year if he chooses to utilize it. In his
absence junior Justin Flagg played well against Houston, tying for the team lead with 5
tackles and recovering one fumble in Cougar territory which Cal turned into its first
touchdown. 1996 JC All-America linebacker Albert Dorsey has moved from a back-up behind
Matt Beck at one of the ILB positions to the other spot where he will contend with Flagg
for starting duties.
In other injury news, tight end A.J. Kunkle has looked good in practice early this week as he works his way into shape. He really has been sharp in pass-catching drills. Fellow tight end Corey Smith hasn't quite returned to full duty from his ankle injury, but has been allowed to do some hitting drills. He is hopeful of returning for the Oklahoma game, but still hasn't been medically cleared.
Head coach Tom Holmoe said his team will not practice this Saturday, giving the team the day off.
