KICKOFF/ATTENDANCE:
Kickoff is at 4 p.m. PT. Attendance is expected to be approximately 50,000.
TELEVISION:
The game will be aired live regionally as part of the Pacific-10 Conference - ABC Sports package (locally on KGO TV, Channel 7). Tim Brant will call play-by-play with Terry Gannon providing analysis. Lewis Johnson will supply sideline reports.
RADIO:
The game will be aired live over KGO Radio (810 AM) San Francisco and the five-station Golden Bear Radio Network. Other stations on the network are: KRCK (1490 AM) in King City; KGOE (105.5 FM) in Eureka; KFIV (1360 AM) in Modesto; and KJAX (1280 AM) in Stockton. The pre-game show begins 15 minutes prior to kickoff. KGO Radio is in its 24th season as the Golden Bears flagship station. Sports Director Joe Starkey is in his 23rd season handling play-by-play duties, and he is joined with color commentary by Lee Grosscup, who is in his ninth year in the booth. The Tom Holmoe Show airs weekly on KGO Radio each Tuesday at 6:20 p.m.

THE SERIES:
Saturday's game will be the 85th meeting between the Bears and Trojans with USC holding a 53-26-5 advantage. Last year, Cal defeated USC, 22-15. The victory was the Bears first over the Trojans in Los Angeles since 1970. Cal built a 19-0 lead and then shut down a late Trojan rally while maintaining a 38:23 to 21:37 time-of-possession edge. The Bears have not posted back-to-back victories over the Trojans since Cal defeated USC, 12-0, in 1957 in Berkeley and topped the Trojans in Los Angeles, 14-12, the following year.
TRAVEL PLANS:
The USC travel party will arrive at the Oakland Airport Friday afternoon at 2:15 p.m. on an America West charter and will stay at the Berkeley Marina Marriott (510-548-7920). Sports Information Director Tim Tessalone and Associate Sports Information Director Nancy Mazmanian will accompany the team. USC will return to Los Angeles immediately after the game.

AROUND THE PAC-10:
The remainder of the Pac-10 schedule for the week of Sept. 27 is: Arizona State at Oregon State; Oregon at Stanford; Arizona at UCLA; and Boise State at Washington State. Washington is idle.

BECK IN THE BACKFIELD:
Sophomore linebacker Matt Beck made himself a constant presence in the Sooner backfield in Saturday's win over Oklahoma, registering nine tackles, including six for loss (minus 17 yards). In 1996 when Beck paced the Bears with 97 tackles, he had a total of six tackles for loss for the entire season. Beck's single-game amount also established a school record for tackles for loss in a game, breaking the mark of five set by Joel Dickson (1987), Cornell Collier (1989) and Mick Barsala (1991).
WEEKLY PRESS CONFERENCE:
California's weekly press luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23 in the Hall of Fame Room in Memorial Stadium. Head coach Tom Holmoe and several Cal players will be in attendance for interviews. In addition, USC head coach John Robinson will be available via a speakerphone beginning at 11:45.

THE COACHES:
Tom Holmoe, California (Brigham Young '83) is in his first year as head coach of the Bears and second with the Cal program. A 1983 graduate of BYU, Holmoe was the Cougars starting cornerback from 1980-82, and led the WAC in interceptions as a sophomore in 1980. He went on to earn first team WAC honors as a senior and later was drafted in the fourth round by the San Francisco 49ers. Holmoe went on to play seven years with in the NFL, all with San Francisco, and helped the 49ers win three Super Bowls. After retiring from pro football, he entered the coaching ranks, serving as a graduate assistant during the 1990 and '91 seasons under LaVell Edwards at his alma mater, BYU. In 1992, Holmoe was reunited with Bill Walsh after accepting and offer to become the Stanford secondary coach. After two years as a member of the Cardinal staff, he moved back to the pro ranks and his former team, the 49ers, as George Seifert's defensive backfield coach for the 1994 and '95 seasons. Last year, Holmoe joined the Bears staff as the defensive coordinator and on Jan. 18, 1997, he was named head football coach at Cal.
John Robinson, USC (Oregon '58) is in the fifth year of his second stint (12th year overall) as the Trojan's head coach. Robinson, 62, has a career collegiate record of 98-32-4. Since his return to USC, the Trojans have captured two Pac-10 co-championships, ranked in the final Top 25 poll three times and won three postseason bowls. Robinson began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Oregon from 1960-71. He then joining the USC staff for the first time as Trojan's offensive coordinator from 1972-74. After serving as backfield coach with the Oakland Raiders in 1975, Robinson returned to USC as head coach in 1976, and subsequently led the Trojans to a 68-14-2 record in seven seasons at the helm. During that time, he also guided USC to three Rose Bowl titles. In 1983, Robinson was named head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, leading the team to a 79-74 mark and a pair of NFC championship game appearances during his nine years with the organization. After spending 1992 as a television analyst, Robinson returned to the sidelines when he was named USC's head coach again on Jan. 3, 1993.

PAC-10 FEED:

HIGHLIGHT SHOW:
The weekly one-half hour California Football Highlight Show, hosted by Tim Sharp, is in its 12th season on KPIX-TV (Channel 5) in San Francisco. The show will be aired each Sunday on KPIX at 5 p.m. In addition, the program will be rebroadcast on SportsChannel on Mondays, usually at 6:30 p.m., and Tuesdays at 4 p.m. each week. In addition, Cal football will also be featured in SportsChannel's weekly Cal Sports Magazine show this fall. The show is scheduled to air Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at 6 p.m. There will be re-airings throughout Friday and Saturday mornings.
GAME DAY PROMOTIONS:
Saturday's game between Cal and USC is Parents Weekend for the Bears. In addition, the Cal student section, which originated the tradition in 1910, will perform card stunts at halftime.
IKON OFFICE SOLUTIONS PLAY OF THE WEEK: Each week throughout the 1997 football season, IKON Office Solutions will salute the Golden Bear Play of the Week. For the Oklahoma game, the play was Justin Vedder's 15-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Shaw with 2:27 left the in game. The score broke a 34-34 tie and lifted the Bears to victory.
THE TIMES PLAYER OF THE GAME: Each week throughout the 1997 football season, the Contra Costa Times will recognize the Cal Player of the Game. Sophomore linebacker Matt Beck was selected as the Cal Player of the Game against Oklahoma. He registered a team-high nine tackles (five unassisted) and had six tackles for loss for minus 17 yards.
