KICKOFF/ATTENDANCE: Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. PT. Attendance is expected to be approximately 45,000.
TELEVISION: The game will be aired live nationally as part of the Pacific-10 Conference - Fox Sports Net package (locally on Bay TV). Barry Tompkins will call play-by-play with Tom Ramsey providing analysis. Carol Lewis will supply sideline reports.
RADIO: The game will be aired live over KGO Radio (810 AM) San Francisco and the five-station Golden Bear Radio Network. Other stations on the network are: KRCK (1490 AM) in King City; KGOE (105.5 FM) in Eureka; KFIV (1360 AM) in Modesto; and KJAX (1280 AM) in Stockton. The pre-game show begins 15 minutes prior to kickoff. KGO Radio is in its 24th season as the Golden Bears flagship station. Sports Director Joe Starkey is in his 23rd season handling play-by-play duties, and he is joined with color commentary by Lee Grosscup, who is in his ninth year in the booth. The Tom Holmoe Show airs weekly on KGO Radio each Tuesday at 6:20 p.m.

THE SERIES: This game will be the third meeting between the Bears and Sooners with Oklahoma holding a 2-0 advantage. The two universities first met in Berkeley in 1954 with Oklahoma defeating Cal, 27-13. The second game between the schools, held in Norman, Okla., in 1976, resulted in a 28-17 Sooner victory.
TRAVEL PLANS: The Oklahoma travel party will arrive at the Oakland Airport Friday afternoon and will stay at the Berkeley Marina Marriott (510/548-7920). Media Relations Director Mike Prusinski and Assistant Media Relations Directors Mike Houck and Chris Williams will accompany the team. Oklahoma will return to Norman immediately after the game.
AROUND THE PAC-10: The remainder of the Pac-10 schedule for the week of Sept. 20 is: Stanford at Oregon State; Brigham Young at Arizona State; Fresno State at Oregon; Nebraska at Washington; Arizona at Ohio State; and Washington State at Illinois. Both USC and UCLA are Idle.

WEEKLY PRESS CONFERENCE: California's weekly press luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16 in the Hall of Fame Room in Memorial Stadium. Head coach Tom Holmoe and several Cal players will be in attendance for interviews. In addition, Oklahoma head coach John Blake will be available via a speakerphone beginning at 11:45.
THE COACHES: Tom Holmoe, California (Brigham Young '83) is in his first
year as head coach of the Bears and second with the Cal program. A 1983
graduate of BYU, Holmoe was the Cougars starting cornerback from 1980-82, and
led the WAC in interceptions as a sophomore in 1980. He went on to earn first
team WAC honors as a senior and later was drafted in the fourth round by the
San Francisco 49ers. Holmoe went on to play seven years with in the NFL, all
with San Francisco, and helped the 49ers win three Super Bowls. After retiring
from pro football, he entered the coaching ranks, serving as a graduate
assistant during the 1990 and '91 seasons under LaVell Edwards at his alma
mater, BYU. In 1992, Holmoe was reunited with Bill Walsh after accepting and
offer to become the Stanford secondary coach. After two years as a member of
the Cardinal staff, he moved back to the pro ranks and his former team, the
49ers, as George Seifert's defensive backfield coach for the 1994 and '95
seasons. Last year, Holmoe joined the Bears staff as the defensive coordinator
and on Jan. 18, 1997, he was named head football coach at Cal.
John Blake, Oklahoma (Oklahoma '83) , the Sooners' 20th head football coach, is
in his second season as the helm of the Oklahoma football program and has a
career record of 4-9. Blake, who is the nation's second youngest collegiate
head football coach, returned to his alma mater after a three-year stint as
defensive line coach with the Dallas Cowboys from 1993-95. Blake began his
coaching career as a volunteer coach for Oklahoma in 1985, then served as
graduate assistant coach with the Sooners during the 1986-87 seasons. He was
the tight ends/receivers coach at the University of Tulsa in 1988 before
returning to Oklahoma as an assistant coach from 1989-92. As a player for
Oklahoma, Blake was a member of two Big Eight championship teams (1979 and
1980) and two league runners-up (1978 and 1982). During his playing days, OU
compiled a 36-11-1 overall record and ranked third in 1979 and 1980, 20th in
1981 and 16th in 1982.

PAC-10 FEED: The Pacific-10 Conference provides a weekly satellite feed every Wednesday throughout the season. HIGHLIGHT SHOW: The weekly one-half hour California Football Highlight Show, hosted by Tim Sharp, is in its 12th season on KPIX-TV (Channel 5) in San Francisco. The show will be aired each Sunday on KPIX at 5 p.m. In addition, the program will be rebroadcast on SportsChannel on Mondays, usually at 6:30 p.m., and Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m. each week. In addition, Cal football will also be featured in SportsChannel's weekly Cal Sports Magazine show this fall. The show is scheduled to air Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at 6:00 p.m. There will be re-airings throughout Friday and Saturday mornings.
IKON OFFICE SOLUTIONS PLAY OF THE WEEK: Each week throughout the 1997 football season, IKON Office Solutions will salute the Golden Bear Play of the Week. For the Houston game, the play was Bobby Shaw's 50-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Justin Vedder with 0:44 remaining in the first half. The score gave the Bears a 21-3 lead heading into intermission.
THE TIMES PLAYER OF THE GAME: Each week throughout the 1997 football season, the Contra Costa Times will recognize the Cal Player of the Game. All-America candidate Bobby Shaw was selected as the Cal Player of the Game against Houston. The senior wide receiver out of San Francisco snared 11 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns in Cal's 35-3 season opening victory versus the Cougars.
SHAW MOVES UP CAREER LISTS: With his 11-catch, 204-yard, two-touchdown performance in the season-opener against Houston Sept. 6, senior wide receiver Bobby Shaw moved up several spots on Cal's career lists. Shaw, who earned Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week honors for his effort, enters the Oklahoma game with 116 career receptions, good for eighth all-time at Cal. He also needs just one more 100-yard game to tie Wesley Walker (1973-76) atop the Cal charts with eight career 100-yard contests.

HOMECOMING '97: Saturday's home opener versus Oklahoma will also be the highlight of Cal's Homecoming and Reunion Weekend '97. The California Alumni Association expects more than 1,000 alumni and their families to return to Berkeley for the event. A keynote address, given by Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl on Friday, Sept. 19, will kickoff the three-day celebration. Class and college reunions, lectures, open houses, tours and a special convocation for members of the classes of '71 and '72 who may have been unable to attend their graduation ceremonies will also be held. POSTERS, GET YOUR POSTERS: The first 10,000 fans arriving at Memorial Stadium for the Oklahoma versus Cal game will receive a free 1997 Cal football schedule poster. The color 18 X 24 poster features Cal wide receiver Bobby Shaw along with the Bears '97 schedule.
NATIONAL CHAMPS TO BE HONORED: Cal's 1997 national champion men's gymnastics and rugby teams will be honored at halftime of the Saturday's game.
