Oregon State Visits California
KICKOFF/ATTENDANCE: Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m. Attendance is expected to be approximately 40,000.
TELEVISION: The game will be aired on a tape delay basis locally at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2 by Fox Sports Bay Area (formerly SportsChannel).
RADIO: The game will be aired live over KGO Radio (810 AM) San Francisco and the five-station Golden Bear Radio Network. Other stations on the network are: KRCK (1490 AM) in King City; KGOE (105.5 FM) in Eureka; KFIV (1360 AM) in Modesto; and KJAX (1280 AM) in Stockton. The pre-game show begins 15 minutes prior to kickoff. KGO Radio is in its 24th season as the Golden Bears flagship station. Sports Director Joe Starkey is in his 23rd season handling play-by-play duties, and he is joined with color commentary by Lee Grosscup, who is in his ninth year in the booth. The Tom Holmoe Show airs weekly on KGO Radio each Tuesday at 6:20 p.m.

THE SERIES: Saturday's game will be the 50th meeting between the Bears and Beavers with Cal holding a 29-20 advantage in the series. Last year, the two teams battled through three overtime sessions before Cal finally put away Oregon State, 48-42. Though Cal dominated the game, running up 504 yards to OSU's 277, six Golden Bear turnovers (four interceptions and two fumbles) kept the game close.
TRAVEL PLANS: The Oregon State travel party will arrive at the Oakland Airport Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. via a Reno Airlines charter and will stay at the Berkeley Marina Marriott (510-548-7920). Sports Information Director Hal Cowan will accompany the team. Oregon State will return to Corvallis immediately following the game.
AROUND THE PAC-10: The remainder of the Pac-10 schedule for the week of Nov. 1 is: Washington State at Arizona State; UCLA at Stanford; and USC at Washington State. Both Arizona and Oregon are idle.
THE COACHES: Tom Holmoe, California (Brigham Young '83) is in his first year as head coach of the Bears and second with the Cal program. A 1983 graduate of BYU, Holmoe was the Cougars starting cornerback from 1980-82, and led the WAC in interceptions as a sophomore in 1980. He went on to earn first team WAC honors as a senior and later was drafted in the fourth round by the San Francisco 49ers. Holmoe went on to play seven years with in the NFL, all with San Francisco, and helped the 49ers win three Super Bowls. After retiring from pro football, he entered the coaching ranks, serving as a graduate assistant during the 1990 and '91 seasons under LaVell Edwards at his alma mater, BYU. In 1992, Holmoe was reunited with Bill Walsh after accepting and offer to become the Stanford secondary coach. After two years as a member of the Cardinal staff, he moved back to the pro ranks and his former team, the 49ers, as George Seifert's defensive backfield coach for the 1994 and '95 seasons. Last year, Holmoe joined the Bears staff as the defensive coordinator and on Jan. 18, 1997, he was named head football coach at Cal.
Mike Riley, Oregon State (Alabama '75) returned to his hometown of Corvallis, Ore., last December when he was hired as OSU's 27th head football coach. It is his first collegiate head coaching position and to this point Riley has led the Beavers to a 3-4 overall mark However, Riley is not a rookie head coach as his resume includes six seasons as a head coach in professional football. From 1987-90, Riley was the head coach of Winnipeg in the Canadian Football League. He compiled a 40-32-0 record while with the Bombers prior to moving on to become the head coach of the San Antonio Riders of the World League of American Football. After two years in San Antonio, he joined John Robinson's staff at USC where he was the Trojans' assistant head coach and offensive coordinator from '92-96.

MORE RECORDS WAITING FOR SHAW: If he can grab nine catches for 150 yards this week against Oregon State this week, Bobby Shaw will add his name to the top of three more Cal record lists. He enters the game with 57 receptions for 921 yards, and with the above totals, he would have 66 catches and 1071 yards, passing the school single-season marks set by Sean Dawkins in 1992. With only six receptions, Shaw will move to the top of the career receiving chart, ahead of Brian Treggs (1988-91), who had 167 catches for the Bears. Shaw already owns Cal records for career receiving yards (2,559) and career 100-yard games (11).
PAC-10 FEED: The Pacific-10 Conference provides a weekly satellite feed every Wednesday throughout the season. HIGHLIGHT SHOW: The weekly one-half hour California Football Highlight Show, hosted by Tim Sharp, is in its 12th season on KPIX-TV (Channel 5) in San Francisco. The show will be aired each Sunday on KPIX at 5 p.m. In addition, the program will be rebroadcast on Fox Sports Bay Area (formerly SportsChannel) on Mondays, usually at 6:30 p.m., and Tuesdays at 4 p.m. each week. In addition, Cal football will also be featured in Fox Sports Bay Area's weekly Cal Sports Magazine show this fall. The show is scheduled to air Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at 6 p.m. There will be re-airings throughout Friday and Saturday mornings.
GAMEDAY PROMOTIONS: Saturday's Cal-Oregon State game is Alumni Band Day, with both the Cal Marching Band and Alumni Band performing during the contest. In addition, it is Northern California High School Day, with high school students receiving a general admission ticket for $4.00 with a valid school ID. Finally, Coca-Cola and Thrifty/Payless are sponsoring a 2-for-1 deal on all general admission seating.
IKON OFFICE SOLUTIONS PLAY OF THE WEEK: Each week throughout the 1997 football season, IKON Office Solutions will salute the Golden Bear Play of the Week. Against UCLA, the play was Justin Vedder's 18-yard TD pass to wide receiver Bruce Pierre in the third quarter. Pierre caught the ball on the left hash mark, spun away from a defender then raced into the endzone for the first score of his career.
THE TIMES PLAYER OF THE GAME: Each week throughout the 1997 football season, the Contra Costa Times will recognize the Cal Player of the Game. For the UCLA game, the player was wide receiver Bobby Shaw, who had nine receptions for 122 yards. Of Cal's 13 pass completions on the day, nine went to Shaw, who posted his fifth 100-yard effort of the season.
