California-Washington Game Notes
Washington (4-1, 2-0) won its 15th consecutive game over
California (2-3, 0-2) with the Huskies 30-3 win over the Bears
today. Cal hadn't met Washington the past two seasons as part
of the Pac-10 master schedule which sees each school missing a
particular conference opponent for two consecutive seasons.
The Huskies now lead the series 41-32-4. Cal hasn't claimed
a victory over Washington since the 1976 season when the Bears
shut out the Huskies 7-0 in Seattle. In games played in
Berkeley, Washington leads 21-18-1, and the Huskies now have an
eight-game winning streak in Cal's Memorial Stadium.
Despite winning the overall advantage in terms of total
yardage (344-336), Cal only managed to put three points on the
board. The Bears held the Huskies to only seven points through
the first half of play, and the Cal defense only allowed six
third-down conversions in the game. Washington, however, was
3-for-3 today in fourth down conversions. Cal's three points
today is the lowest point-total for the Golden Bears since the
Bears were shutout at USC, 61-0, on October 22, 1994.
Washington tight end Cameron Cleeland's 43-yard touchdown
reception from Brock Huard with 14:06 in the second quarter was
the longest reception of Cleeland's career.
Washington had some key special team plays. Mac Tuiaea
blocked a Ignacio Brache field goal attempt with 2:28 in the
first quarter, which eventually led to a Husky touchdown.
Derrell Daniels recovered a Deltha O'Neal fumble on the opening
kickoff of the second half with 14:46 in the third quarter that
led to another Husky touchdown. Free safety Tony Parrish
intercepted a Justin Vedder pass with 5:18 in the fourth
quarter and had a 39-yard return to seal the victory.
After creating three turnovers in each of the first two
games (both victories), the Cal defense has not had a single
turnover the last three weeks (all losses), after ranking 12th
nationally in turnover margin following the first two games.
Tarik Smith's 32-yard run in the third quarter was the
longest run for Smith this season. Smith finished the day with
84 yards on 17 carries. Freshman tailback Marcus Fields was
also impressive in limited action with six carries for 36 yards
today.
Cal senior receiver Bobby Shaw is closing in on several Cal
single-season and career marks. Shaw has nine 100-yard
receiving games in his career (out of 21 career starts). He now
has moved past Mike Caldwell (1990-93) in third place with 144
career receptions, needing only 24 catches the rest of the
season (an average of 4.0 receptions in the final six games) to
break Cal's all-time receiving record held by Brian Treggs.
He's also on pace to break Cal's single-season receptions and
touchdown catch marks held by Sean Dawkins (65 receptions and
14 touchdowns in 1992). Shaw currently has 39 receptions for
641 yards through five games this season.
Freshman tight end Brian Surgener had a fine game today,
with four catches for 38 yards. Surgener also had an apparent
30-yard reception over the middle of the field that was ruled
incomplete.Surgener now has eight catches for 108 yards this
season. Senior fullback Mark Vera also had a good day with five
catches for 51 yards. Junior wide receiver Bruce Pierre also
had his first catch as a Bear, a 12-yard reception with 12:18
left in the second quarter.
Sophomore linebacker Matt Beck had nine unassisted tackles
today, matching a season-best nine tackles against Oklahoma
Sept. 20. Beck also had one sack for 10 yards. He now has 10
tackles for loss for minus 32 yards this season. Senior
defensive back Kato Serwanga had nine total tackles (eight
unassisted) and three pass break ups.
