No. 22 Fresno State Tops Cal, 6-1

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State defeated California Saturday 6-1 at the Fresno State tennis courts.

The No. 22 Bulldogs improve to 9-7 with the win, their 33rd-straight win at home dating back to 1993. Cal drops to 6-5 with the loss, its first in three matches.

"It's incredible to have a Pac-10 team in Fresno," Fresno State head coach Peter Smith said. "So it's a great feeling to win and I think it's a historical day for Bulldog tennis."

Cal's only wins of the day came at No. 1 singles when Chris Santoso beat Fredrik Giers 6-3, 6-3 and at No. 3 doubles.

The Bulldogs were able to get the jump by winning two of three doubles to go up 1-0. After Fresno State won at No. 1 doubles, and Cal won at No. 3, the Bulldogs needed a win at No. 2 by senior Fresrik Giers and freshman Andy Scorteanu to clinch the doubles points. Down 7-6, Giers and Scorteanu (11-7) won three of the last four games to win 9-7 over Chris Santoso and David Suton. A major turning point came when Giers kept a rally going with a between-the-legs shot that put them up 7-6 in the match.

It was sophomore Kelly Guliett and freshman Robert Lindstedt who got the win at No. 1, 8-6 over Nathan Jackmon and Brian Fernando. That win improves the nations's 17th-ranked duo to 8-2 this season.

After doubles, Fresno State won five of six in singles. Scorteanu at No. 4, Gullett at No. 5 and freshman Oliver LeJuene at No. 6 all won in straight sets. Lindstedt (No. 2) and sophomore Eni Ghidirmic (no. 3) won in three sets.
