California Sweeps San Diego, 7-0
The Cal men's tennis team opened the 1997 spring dual match season with a 7-0
victory over the University of San Diego, Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the Hellman Tennis
Complex in Berkeley.
The Bears won two-of-three doubles matches to take a 1-0
lead heading into the singles competition. Alex Sueur playing No. 1 singles for
Cal ousted German Maldonado 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the only singles match to go all
three sets.
In other singles action, Chris Santoso, Nathan Jackmon, Minh Le,
Brian Fernando and Chris Cornell all dispensed of their USD counterparts in
straight sets.
Cal's only loss on the day was in the No. 1 doubles match when
USD's team of Maldonado and R. Rodriguez upset Cal's nationally-ranked No. 11
team of Jackmon and Bobby Mahal 9-8 as the Bears duo dropped the tiebreaker 8-6.
Cal travels to No. 6 Pepperdine and UC Irvine for matches on Saturday and
Sunday. Play begins at 1 p.m. on both days.
