Cal Drops Match to Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State men's tennis team (10-9, 2-7 Pac-10) closed out its 1996-97 home schedule today on a winning note by defeating California (10-9, 3-4 Pac-10), 4-3 at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

In doubles action, ASU won at No.'s 1 and 3 for the first point. The Cal bears did not make it easy at No. 3, coming from behind to tie the pro set at seven before ASU's Tim Hammond and Gustavo Marcaccio put the match away with two straight games.

In singles play, ASU's No. 1 player Sergio Elias had an easy time with Cal's Chris Santoso winning 6-3, 6-2.

The Sun Devils would go on to close out the dual defeating the Golden Bears at the No. 2 and 3 positions.

Arizona State will end its season on the road against arch-rival Arizona in Tucson on Saturday, April 19.
