Jackmon/Mahal Fall in Finals
STANFORD, Calif. -- California's 29th-ranked and second seeded doubles tandem, Nathan Jackmon and Bobby Mahal, fell to the top-seeded duo, Stanford's Bob and Mike Bryan, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in Tuesday's doubles final at the Rolex Northwest Regional Championships at Stanford.
Jackmon and Mahal, who won four straight matches on the road to the championship match, looked to be on their way to taking a fifth after winning the first set. But Bryan and Bryan proved to be too much, wearing down the Cal team in the second and third sets to earn an automatic berth in the 1998 Rolex National Individual Championships, which will be played Feb. 5-8 in Dallas, Texas.
Overall, Cal posted it's strongest tournament of the fall season with two Golden Bears (Chris Santoso, David Sutton) advancing it the fourth round of singles play and two others (Mahal and Jackmon) reaching the quarterfinals.
In doubles action, two additional Cal teams also had strong outings. Minh Le and Eric Dmytruk, who entered the tournament unseeded and without a bye in the first round, stormed their way into the quarterfinals, winning four matches before being defeated, 8-5, by Jackmon and Mahal. The duo of David Sutton and Chris Santoso reached the tournament's fourth round but couldn't get past Washington's third-seeded tandem, Robert Kendrick and Eric Drew, falling 8-1 in the fourth round.
The Cal men's tennis team will return to the hard courts Saturday, Jan. 24, when they open the 1998 dual match season by hosting an all-Bay Area double header versus Saint Mary's at 9 a.m. and Santa Clara at 1:30 p.m.
