No. 23 Cal hosts Oregon and Stanford

THE MATCH-UP: On Wednesday, March 5 at 1:30 p.m., the Cal men's tennis team hosts the University of Oregon and returns to the court on Saturday, March 8, to take on the Stanford Cardinal at noon. Both matches are scheduled to be played at the Hellman Tennis Compex in Berkeley.
THE LINEUPS: Head coach Peter Wright has yet to set a lineup for this week's matches. Cal's No. 1 singles player, Bobby Mahal continues to suffer from tendonitis in his elbow and is not scheduled to play this week. Look for Alex Sueur, David Sutton, Nathan Jackmon, Chris Santoso, Minh Le, and Brian Fernando to see action against Oregon and Stanford.
PREVIOUS MATCH UPDATE: The California men's tennis team fell to 3-3 on the season with a 4-3 loss to visiting Utah, Feb. 4. Chris Santoso and Davis Sutton turned in the Bear's top singles performances. Santoso, playing No. 3, beat Utah's Paul McPherson in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 while Sutton won 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles play, the Sutton and Santoso teamed to record an 8-6 victory at No. 1.
THE COMPETITION: Oregon enters this week with an overall record of 3-4 in dual match play. The Ducks are led by senior Dougal Williams and SophomoreCarlos Navaro who have shared time at No. 1 singles this season. The two players team to form Oregon's No. 1 doubles team where they have a 3-1 record on the season. The Ducks face Stanford on Tuesday, March 4 before crossing the bay to take on the Bears Wednesday.
Stanford begins the week with an overall record of 8-1 and a No. 1 ranking in the fall ITA poll. However, the Cardinal have yet to face a Pac-10 Southern Division opponent this season. Stanford is led by No. 23 Ryan Wolters and No. 17 Paul Goldstein, who have a combined 14-1 record at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. As a team, the Cardinal have a combined 56-7 singles dual match record while their doubles record stands at 21-5.
CAL IN THE RANKINGS: The Bears are currently the No. 23-ranked team in the ITA's Rolex Fall Rankings, released Dec. 10. Individually, Cal players rank as follows:

THE COACHES: Peter Wright enters his fourth year at the helm of the Cal program after spending last summer in Atlanta as head coach of the Irish Olympic tennis team. The ninth coach and fourth alumnus to lead the Bears, he boasts a 41-31 (.569) career record and earned Wilson/ITA Regional Coach of the Year honors in 1994. Wright is assisted by associate head coach Cordell Ho, who is also in his fourth year with the Bears.
