Cal Men's Tennis Travels to Arizona and Arizona State

THE MATCH-UP: On Friday, April 12, at 1:30 p.m., the Cal men's tennis team takes on the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson. Following the match, the Bears head for Tempe where the will face the Arizona State Sun Devils, Saturday at Noon.

THE LINEUPS: Head coach Peter Wright has yet to set a lineup for this week's matches, however, look for Chris Santoso, Alex Sueur, Nathan Jackmon, David Sutton, Minh Le and Brian Fernando to see action in singles play. The doubles lineups look to be Sutton/Santoso, Jackmon/Sueur and Le/Gross.

PREVIOUS MATCH UPDATE: The Cal men's tennis team traveled to Los Angeles last week taking on No. 17 USC, April 4, and No. 1 UCLA, April 5. Against the Trojans, only Jackmon at No. 3 for the Bears was able to escape with a win as he defeated Kyle Spencer, 6-3, 6-2. In Westwood, Cal fared slightly better picking up wins at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Sueur defeated Alex Decret in three sets, 7-5, 0-6, 6-4, while Sutton and Santoso teamed to defeat the Bruins' Kevin Kim and Eric Lim, 8-5.

Rebounding from the L.A. roadtrip, Cal played host to 15th-ranked Illinois, Monday, April 7. Sutton and Santoso set the tone for the day as clinching the doubles point for Cal with their 9-8(4) win over Jerry Turek and Brady Blain. In singles play, Sueur, Jackmon, Sutton and Le each bested their opponents as Cal cruised to the 5-2 upset victory.

THE COMPETITION: Arizona enters the weekend with a ranking of No. 62 in the current ITA poll. The Wildcats have lost seven consecutive dual matches and stand at 5-10 on the year. Arizona State enters the weekend as the 50th-ranked team in the current ITA poll. The Sun Devils are 9-8 on the year and are coming off a 6-1 win over Arizona. Cal's two conference victories on the year came March 28 and 29 when the Bears hosted the Arizona schools in Berkeley.

CAL IN THE RANKINGS: The Bears are currently the No. 43-ranked team in the ITA's Rolex Spring No. 1 rankings, released April 1. Individually, Cal players rank as follows:

The ITA's Spring No. 4 ranking will be released April 15.

THE COACHES: Peter Wright enters his fourth year at the helm of the Cal program after spending last summer in Atlanta as head coach of the Irish Olympic tennis team. The ninth coach and fourth alumnus to lead the Bears, he boasts a 47-35 (.573) career record and earned Wilson/ITA Regional Coach of the Year honors in 1994. Wright is assisted by associate head coach Cordell Ho, who is also in his fourth year with the Bears.
