Cal Tennis Players and Coach Receive Pac-10 Honors
BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal men's tennis coach Peter Wright was Pac-10 Southern Division Coach
of the Year, on Wednesday, May 5. Wright earns his first Pac-10 Coach of
the Year honors after four seasons at the helm of the Bears to go with the
Wilson/ITA Regional Coach of the Year Honors he garnered in 1994. Returning
only six players from last year's squad, Wright led the Bears to a 10-12
overall record and a berth in the NCAA West Regionals (May 9-11).
Sophomore Amanda Augustus, who posted a 18-14 record at No. 1 singles
to go with a 19-8 record at No. 1 doubles, was the only Bear named to the
All-Pac-10 Southern Division first team. Second team honors were earned by
women's No. 2, sophomore Francesca La'O, and Men's No. 1, sophomore Chris
Santoso. La'O, 31-10 in singles play, produced more wins than any other
Bear netter in 1997. In addition, freshmen Claire Curran and Esther Knox
both received all-conference honorable mentions.
