No. 18 Cal Travels to Stanford, Hosts Texas

THE MATCH-UP: The 18th-ranked California women's tennis team,5-2 overall, 1-1 in the Pac-10 southern division, plays at No. 2 Stanford, Friday, Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m. Following the match the Bears return home to face No. 4 Texas, Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley.
THE LINEUPS: Seven Cal players are expected to see action this week. The tentative singles lineup includes; Amanda Augustus, Francesca La'O, Claire Curran, Stephanie Tibbits, Emeka Mayes, Lisa Swierniak. Expect to see teams of Augustus/Curran, La'O/Swierniak and Mayes/Jenny Lee in doubles play.
MATCH UPDATE: Cal had a strong showing last weekend when they traveled to Florida to face the Miami Hurricanes and Florida State Seminoles. On Feb. 22, Cal defeated the No. 25 Hurricanes 6-3. Winners in singles play included No. 2 La'O, No. 4 Curran, No. 5 Swierniak, and No. 6 Mayes. Augustus teamed with Curran for a win at No. 1 doubles, while Swierniak and Mayes put together a win at No. 3 doubles.
In action against the Seminoles on Feb. 23, the Cal swept singles play and La'O and Swierniak posted an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles as the Bears went on to a 7-2 victory over Florida State.
THE COMPETITION: Stanford is currently ranked No. 2 by the ITA. The Cardinal are 5-0 on the year in dual match competition and are led by Katie Schlukebir, who is 2-2 at No. 1 singles in dual matches. Overall, Schlukebir boasts a 17-4 record in 1996-97 competition. Texas currently ranks No. 4 on the ITA charts. As for individuals, six Longhorns can be found in the ITA's Top-90 including No. 12 Cristina Moros, No. 27 Sandy Sureephong, No. 42 Michelle Faucher, No. 47 Laura Berendt, No. 60 Melody Falco, and No. 89 Farley Taylor. Taylor finished the 1996 season with a final ITA ranking of No. 15.
CAL IN THE RANKINGS: The Bears are currently the No. 18-ranked team on the ITA's Rolex Fall Rankings, released Dec. 10. Individually, Cal players rank as follows:

THE COACHES: One of the Top 10 winningest coaches in women's collegiate tennis, Jan Brogan is in her 19th year as the Bears head coach with a career record of 342-139(.711). She is joined by first-year assistant Ann Henricksson, who spent more than 15 years on the women's professional tour.
