MATCH UPDATE: The Cal women's tennis team lost to Stanford, 8-1, in Pac-10 southern division competition Feb. 28. Cal's lone victory on the day came at No. 1 doubles where Amanda Augustus and Claire Curran defeated a highly regarded tandem of Ania Bleszynski and Julie Scott. The Bears record slipped to 5-3 overall, 1-2 in conference while No. 2-ranked Stanford improved its record to 12-1, 3-0. On Saturday, March 1 in Berkeley, the Bears dropped a close match to No. 4 Texas, 6-3. Cal picked up wins from No. 4 Stephanie Tibbits and No. 5 Emeka Mayes, but came up short in three three-set singles matches. Entering doubles competition, the Bears needed a sweep to secure the victory and looked as if they were headed that way when Cal's No. 2 doubles team of Francesca La'O and Lisa Swierniak defeated Texas' Laura Berendt and Sandy Sureephong. The Longhorns prevailed, however, winning the two remaining contests 8-5 and 9-7.
