No. 18 Women Open Dual Meet Season In Arizona: After a successful weekend at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships, the 18th-ranked California women's tennis team opens the dual meet season in Arizona this weekend with matches against No. 18 Arizona State (Friday) and No. 5 Arizona(Saturday). Matches with the Sun Devils are slated for 1:30 p.m. in Tempe while Saturday's matches against the Wildcats in Tucson will begin at 11 a.m.

The Lineups: Seven Cal players will travel to Arizona with all expecting to see action. The tentative singles lineup includes; Amanda Augustus, Francesca La'O, Esther Knox, Stephanie Tibbits, Claire Curran and Emeka Mayes. Expect to see teams of Augustus/Curran, La'O/Knox and Mayes/Swierniak in doubles play.

Pac-10 Indoors Report: Most of Cal's success at the Pac-10 Indoors (Jan. 16-19) came in doubles play as all three of the Golden Bear teams advanced to the final in their respective brackets. Augustus/Curran playing the first tier defeated Bleszynski/Scott from Stanford, 7-5, 6-2, to capture the championship for Cal. The team of La'O/Knox, competing in the second tier fell to their counterparts from Stanford, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, while Mayes/Swierniak won the third tier final over Burt/Heiser, 7-5, 6-4. In singles action only Mayes and Curran, both playing in the third tier, advanced to the semifinal round of play. Teryn Ashley of Stanford stopped each of them, Curran, 6-2, 6-3, in the semis, and Mayes, 6-4, 6-4, in the finals.

The Competition: Arizona State is currently ranked No. 16 by the ITA and is led by Reka Cseresynes, who ranked No. 18 in the fall poll. Cal leads the series with the Sun Devils 17-7, with Arizona State defeating the Bears 5-1 the last time the schools met in 1996. Arizona is currently ranks fifth in the country while Vicky Maes, who held the No. 1 ranking in the preseason poll, currently ranks No. 7. Cal leads the series with the Wildcats 24-10, with Arizona defeating the Bears 5-1 the last time the schools met in 1996.

Cal In The Rankings: The Bears are currently the No. 18-ranked team on the ITA's Rolex Fall Rankings, released Dec. 10. Individually, Cal players rank as follows: singles doubles 69 Amanda Augustus (so.) 12. Amanda Augustus (so.)/Francesca La'O (so.) 104(t) Francesca La'O (so.)

The ITA's Spring No. 1 ranking will be released in March.

The Coaches: One of the Top 10 winningest coaches in women's collegiate tennis, Jan Brogan is in her 19th year as the Bears head coach with a career record of 342-139(.711). She is joined by first-year assistant Ann Henricksson, who spent more than 15 years on the women's professional tour.
