The California men's tennis team (14-8, 4-3 Pac-10) will travel to Utah next week to take on BYU in the first round of the NCAA Championships. There are 16 regional sites across the nation, with the winners of each advancing to play in Athens, Georgia, May 19-22.
The Cal men are the #14 seed in the NCAAs, and play BYU in the first round on Friday, May 11, and then the winner of Wake Forest and Fresno State on Saturday, May 12. The winner of our regional will most likely play Georgia at Georgia in the round of 16.
In the individual portion of the NCAA tournament, Cal will feature only one player, as sophomore and No. 17-ranked John Paul Fruttero will compete for an individual title at the NCAA championships. Fruttero tallied the best record and the most number of wins on the team this year, holding down a 28-13 record, including a 15-7 mark in dual match competition, all coming at the No. 1 spot for the Bears. Fruttero opened the fall season ranked No. 7 in the country by the ITA.
