SAN FRANCISCO - California head coach Peter Wright knew that 10th-ranked Southern Methodist would be a tough test for his young Golden Bears, especially in the season opener. And unfortunately for Cal, the Mustangs, were just that. SMU, which has four players ranked among the nation's Top 100 in singles, bounced back from a 1-0 deficit to swept all six singles matches to defeat Cal, 6-1, at the San Francisco Tennis Club, Sunday night.
Cal, which struggled in doubles last season, had the partisan crowd thinking upset early on, as the Bears opened the dual match by taking two off the three doubles contests to earn the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead. The sophomore tandem of Scott Kintz and Erik Dmytruk brought home the Bears first victory of the season with an 8-4 upset of college tennis' No. 49-ranked doubles team, Toby Hansson and Jon Wallmark. Sophomore Adrian Barnes and senior Chris Santoso wrapped up the doubles point for Cal with a 9-7 stunner over No. 7 Dustin Mauck and Keith Pollak.
However, that is as close as the Bears would get, as the Mustangs roared back to take all six singles matches. Mauck , Wallmark and Symen DeLange put SMU up 3-1 with straight set victories at the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 positions, respectively. The other three matches all went the distance. At No. 1, Barnes took the opening set from No. 49-ranked Hansson before eventually falling 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, while 17th-ranked Ignacio Hirigoyen was able to slip past Santoso at No. 2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Gerardo Mulas closed out the singles sweep for SMU with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 victory over Cal's Andrey Vinogradsky.
