Berkeley - The 25th-ranked California men's tennis team took five of six singles matches to hand No. 37 Northwestern a 5-2 defeat Saturday at Hellman Tennis Center on the Berkeley campus. The Bears improve to 3-2 in match play while the Wildcats fall to 2-3.
Northwestern took the doubles point, led by the 23rd-ranked tandem of Doug Bohaboy and Martin Bengtsson, who defeated sophomores Scott Kintz and Erik Dmytruk in the No. 1 doubles match, 8-6. Adrian Barnes and Chris Santoso gave the Bears a chance in doubles by defeating NU's tandem of Marc Silva and Joost Hol in the No. 2 doubles match, 8-6. But the Wildcats Derrick Nguyen and Brad Erickson defeated Cal's Chris Lewis and Hiro Nakamura, 8-2, in the No. 3 match.
Barnes and Santoso continued their winning ways in singles play, each notching straight-set victoies. Santoso defeated Marc Silva in the No. 1 match, 6-3, 6-2, while Barnes upset 48th-ranked Doug Bohaboy in the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-2. Dmytruk also chalked up a straight-set victory for Cal, defeating Martin Bengtsson in the No. 3 match, 7-6, 6-3. At the No. 5 and 6 spots, freshmen Chris Lewis and Andrey Vinogradsky each won their singles matches in straight sets. Northwestern's lone singles point came from Brad Erickson, who defeated Cal's Scott Kintz 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 match.
The Bears return to Hellman on Sunday for an 11a.m. match against Rice.
