Lewis Leads No. 25 Men's Tennis at San Diego Tournament

February 8, 1999

San Diego - Freshman Chris Lewis took home the Flight Two Singles Championship and narrowly missed qualifying for the Flight Two Doubles Championships last weekend as California (1-2) participated in the San Diego Intercollegiates, hosted by the University of San Diego.

Lewis rolled through the first three rounds of flight two singles competition, defeating UC San Diego's Graeme Boushey, 8-3, Redlands' Jordan Strauss, 8-2, (the first two rounds were played in pro form on account of rain) and University of San Diego's Stephen Taylor, 6-2, 6-3. Lewis stayed true to form by taking both the semifinal and championship matches in straight sets, defeating Jorge Aguilar-Mateos of Loyola Marymount, 6-3, 6-0, before downing San Diego State's Travis Hasson, 6-4, 6-2, for the title.

Freshman David Tzou narrowly missed facing Lewis in the flight two finals, losing to Hasson 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals. Lewis and Tzou teamed up in flight two doubles and fell one match short of the championship, losing to USD's Taylor/Bourne, 9-7 in the semifinals.

Sophomore Scott Kintz came close to mirroring Lewis' singles performance in flight one competition. After a first round bye, Kintz defeated Oliver Schweitzer of Pepperdine in the second round, 8-3, before eliminating Colorado's Jared Harbaugh, 6-3, 6-4, in the third round. But Kintz fell to eventual flight one champion Doug Papadia of Colorado, 7-6, 6-4, in the semifinals.

The Bears return to dual match play this week when they host UC Santa Barbara on Thurs. Feb. 11 at Hellman Tennis Center on campus at 1:30 p.m. Cal continues its homestand through next weekend, taking on Northwestern on Feb. 13 and Rice on Feb. 14.
