BERKELEY, Calif. -- California junior Amanda Augustus (Palos Verdes Estates), who teamed with sophomore Amy Jensen to become the first unseeded players in singles or doubles to capture an NCAA tennis title last month at Notre Dame, was one six collegiate women named to the 1998 United States Tennis Association (USTA) All-American Summer Team, the USTA announced recently.
The All-American Summer Team, an elite training program for the top American collegiate tennis players, is administered by a joint effort of the USTA and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The USTA All-American Summer Team will travel to Dallas, Texas, for a training session through June 18 before competing in USTA professional circuit events throughout the summer.
The All-American Summer Teams 1998 tour will culminate at the ITA National Summer Championships presented by the USTA and hosted by the University of Illinois, Aug. 12-16, in Champagne, Ill. The womens singles and doubles winners of the ITA National Summer Championships will receive wild card berths into the U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament.
Joining Augustus on the USTA Womens All-American Summer Team are Marissa Catlin of Georgia, Stephanie Nickitas of Florida, Holly Parkinson of Brigham Young, Sandy Sureephong of Texas and Julie Scott of Stanford.
