Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford University Softball team split a Pac-10
doubleheader with #14 California on Saturday afternoon at the Stanford
Softball Complex. The #9 Cardinal took game one by a 5-0 score, then
dropped game two by a 4-3 decision. With the win, Stanford moves to 29-8
overall, 2-4 in the Pac-10, while California goes to 28-9, 1-4 in the
Pac-10.
In the first game, Stanford scored two unearned runs in the third
inning to take a 2-0 lead. With one out, freshman Jessica Mendoza had a
ground out to second base which scored junior Kellie Wiginton, who reached
on a error by Cal shortstop Katie May. Senior Michelle Schneider then came
came around to score when May overthrew first base with two outs. The
Cardinal later added three more insurance runs in the fifth inning. After
two of the first three batters reached base, Schneider singled home senior
Jennie Foyle to make it 3-0. Mendoza then followed with another single,
which scored Wiginton and Schneider to provide the final margin of victory.
The five runs is all Stanford would need as senior Marcy Crouch shutdown
the Golden Bears for the 21st shutout of her career. Thoush she got in
troble early in the game, Crouch (16-4) kept her composure as she limited
Cal to four hits and gave up just one walk while taking the win.
Game two was a seesaw battle which finally resulted in a 4-3
victory for the Golden Bears. Though Stanford had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, Cal
responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. With
two outs, right fielder Pauline Duenas singled and then stole second. After
a walk to Lisa Iancin put runners on first and second, catcher Megumi
Takasaki doubled down the left field line to knot the game at two. Next up,
designated player Holly Yost singled to center, which scored Iancin and
Takasaki for the two-run advantage. However, the Cardinal soon battled
back. A solo home run by sophomore Jenni Shideler in the fifth brought
Stanford within a run. Later in the game, the Cardinal had runners on first
and second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately, a
line drive by Mendoza was caught at the right field fence by Duenas to end
the game.
Stanford returns to action this Tuesday, April 6th, when the team
travels to Sacramento State for a non-conference doubleheader. The Cardinal
then returns home next Saturday, April 10th, when it hosts Oregon State in
