Men's Tennis defeats Utah, 6-1

No. 25 Bears take five of six singles matches to improve to 6-3

March 1, 1999

Berkeley, CA - With senior team captain and No. 1 singles player Chris Santoso out with a shoulder injury, the rest of the 25th-ranked California men's tennis team had to step up their play if the Bears were to emerge with a victory against visiting Utah. That's exactly what Cal did, taking five of six singles matches and the doubles point to defeat the 68th-ranked Utes, 6-1, in a Monday afternoon match at Hellman Tennis Center on the Berkeley campus. The Bears improve to 6-3 overall, while Utah falls to 4-4.

In the No. 1 doubles match, sophomores Erik Dmytyruk and Scott Kintz fell to Utah's Ben Coates and Trevor Ferguson, 8-4. But Adrian Barnes and Chris Lewis swept Nik Yip and Ashley Dyer, 8-0, in the No. 2 slot to keep Cal's hopes of taking the doubles point alive. Cal's freshman tandem of David Tzou and Andrey Vinogradsky delivered in the No. 3 game, defeating Adam Eke and Ryan Snow to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.

With Santoso out, Barnes filled in at the No. 1 spot, where he had played for the first three competitions of the dual match season without garnering a victory. But Barnes defeated 86th-ranked singles player Ben Coates, convincingly, 7-5, 6-1, to notch his first win in the top slot. Playing at No. 2 for the first time this season, Dmytruk jumped out early on Utah's Ashley Dyer, taking the first set 6-3: but Dyer came back to win the last two sets, taking the match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 3, Kintz defeated Ferguson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, and freshman Chris Lewis emerged from his normal No. 5 slot to win the No. 4 match over Patrick Wallebring, 6-2, 6-2. Vinogradsky defeated Eke at No. 5, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 and Tzou tallied a victory in his first-ever dual match, defeating Yip, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 6 match.
